Dog Knee Brace Size Guide

Find Your Dog's Perfect Knee Brace Fit in 3 Minutes

Getting the right size is everything. A brace that's too loose won't support the joint. Too tight and it cuts circulation. This guide takes 3 minutes and saves you weeks of trial-and-error.

What You'll Need

  • A soft measuring tape (or a piece of string + ruler)
  • Your dog in a relaxed, standing position
  • 2 minutes

Step-by-Step: How to Measure

Measurement A — Leg Circumference (most important)
Wrap the tape around the widest part of your dog's thigh, just above the knee. This is your key measurement. Write it down.

Measurement B — Leg Length
Measure from the top of the knee joint down to the ankle (hock). This helps confirm fit for longer-legged breeds.

Tip: Measure both legs — the injured leg may be slightly swollen. Size up if between measurements.

Which Leg? Left vs. Right

When ordering, choose the brace for the injured leg — not both legs (unless your vet recommends bilateral support).

  • Left rear leg: Choose "Left"
  • Right rear leg: Choose "Right"

Not sure which side? Stand behind your dog. Their left is your right.

How Should It Fit?

Correct fit:

  • Sits snug but you can slip two fingers underneath
  • Dog stands and walks normally within minutes
  • No rubbing or red marks after 30 minutes of wear

Too tight:

  • Dog constantly tries to remove it
  • Redness or indentation marks on skin after removal
  • Dog limps more with it on

Too loose:

  • Brace slides down during walks
  • Dog barely notices it's there (no stabilization happening)
  • Brace rotates around the leg

Breaking In the Brace

Week 1: Wear 30–60 minutes, 2–3x per day
Week 2: 2–4 hours per day
Week 3+: Full activity wear as directed by your vet

Always check the skin daily for the first 2 weeks. Remove at night unless your vet says otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions

My dog measured right between two sizes — which do I pick?
Size up. You can tighten the adjustable straps, but you can't loosen a brace that's too small.

Can I use the brace on the front leg?
Our brace is designed specifically for rear (hind) leg knee support (stifle joint). For front leg issues, please consult your vet.

My dog won't keep it on — what should I do?
Start with very short sessions (10 minutes) while distracting with a chew or lick mat. Most dogs adapt within 5–7 days.

Will this work for my dog's luxating patella?
Yes — many customers use our brace for luxating patella support. Sizes S and M are most common for this condition. Consult your vet for Grade 3–4 luxation.
